Men's Fashion Crimes

Sandals

By Sue Hedges & Angie Savchenko

What a lovely week it’s been! The sun's been shining and Angie and I have been hurriedly rearranging our wardrobes to find something other than black. This got us thinking about men and fashion. But not from the What To Wear perspective – we thought the What Not To Wear angle might be fun!

Our top five things men should NEVER wear:

1. Socks and Sandals
As soon as there’s a ray of sunshine outside, you see them. Last year’s shorts with dirty white socks and Jesus sandals. What amazes me is that sandals are summer footwear - so why add socks? If your feet are too cold for sandals then wear shoes... although of course, shoes and shorts would be another bad look!

2. Speedos
I had a horrifying experience with a Speedo last summer. I was at the beach last summer and as I came over the sand dune, I spotted a tanned man wearing a Speedo and bright orange Crocs. I don’t know what it is about them, but even on a toned figure, Speedos are WRONG. Please wear swimming shorts.

3. Tracksuits
Tracksuits are great. Angie and I love nothing more than to get home from work and slob about in tracksuit bottoms. But ultimately, tracksuits are sportswear, and they should be worn for just that. Sports or slobbing. Not shopping/eating out/picking up from school.

4. Trousers and trainers
Like socks and sandals, these two just don’t go together. Trainers are very comfortable footwear, but please, gentlemen, be careful what you wear them with. I can excuse jeans and trainers if you are going for a long walk or a bike ride perhaps, but when I look around the supermarket and see trousers and trainers or jeans and trainers with the shopping trolley – I just can’t work it out.

5. Toupees
The other day, Angie was in a queue in a shop behind a man who was obviously having a midlife crisis. He had on some trendy jeans and a leather jacket with some nice boots, but he was also very wrinkled and wore a toupee. Had he worn the clothes with a bald head he may have gotten away with it, but instead he looked like a male version of the old saying “mutton dressed as lamb.” Now, there’s nothing wrong with trying to look good, but it has to be within limits. And although there are some very good wigs and toupees about nowadays, there are still some very awful ones – and this was one of them.

With the summer coming, here's a final tip...
Bare chests are for the beach only! Please don’t subject us to them in the street! Just as women conceal our muffin tops under respectable T-shirts and the like, men should give us the same respect. A nice, tanned six pack might brighten our day, but a white fleshy overhang doesn’t!

What do you think is the biggest fashion mistake a man can make? And gentlemen, what do women wear that you simply can't stand? Tell us by dropping a comment below!

I know this is regionally

I know this is regionally dependent, but where I'm from wearing "trainers" with jeans is quite typical. Walk into any of the local shoe stores, and you will see people wearing shorts, jeans, tracksuits, and capri's trying on "trainers".

Oh, and are you serious with the "shoes and shorts" is a bad look bit? I have friends who live in the eastern US(DC to NYC) and they wouldn't be caught dead with flip flops on. While, people in the south or out west wear flip flops as part of their daily summer leisure uniform.

I will say I concur on the toupee and speedos hate. But overall, I think fashion would be boring if there were rules to follow, so those who mix it up and keep it fresh are going to get my most positive marks.
