Health Tip: Get your B12

Carrots may help your eyes and milk may help your bones, but now research indicates that meat, fish, milk, and egg yolks may keep your brain from physically shrinking.

Vitamin B12 (formerly of improving brain function fame), is now thought to stop volume loss in the aging brain. The large brains at the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (OPTIMA), conducted a study of participants ranging from ages 61 to 87, who underwent brain scans, physical exams, and memory testing, all the while having blood withdrawn to track B12 levels. Five years later and after another barrage of tests, researchers concluded that participants who had higher vitamin B12 levels were six times less likely to experience brain shrinkage. Results were published in the journal Neurology.
