Even though there isn’t any snow outside, it’s beginning to look a little like Christmas in Toronto. There are lots of festive and non-festive events for you to enjoy this weekend.
This weekend is full of holiday-themed arts and crafts and baking workshops. At Sherway Gardens, the Gingerbread Cookie Factory will set camp for the 20th time. Visitors can decorate cookies and all proceeds will go to the Trillium Health Centre. Another mall is setting up activities for charity: the Toronto Eaton Centre. For the next three Saturdays, kids can participate in the Swarovski Stars for Wishes Workshop and decorate ornaments. All proceeds will go to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. On Sunday, kids can make and learn about the history of greeting cards at Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum for its Holiday Greeting Cards workshop. If the adults want to have some hands-on fun, there’s an Adult & Youth Wreath Making Workshop taking place at Colborne Lodge. The workshop will also include a tour of the historic house and light refreshments. There are also plenty of workshops you can particpate in at the One of a Kind Christmas Sale & Show. You can make unique gifts or buy some handmade treasures.
If you’re more of an observer than participator in the holiday festivities, there are still plenty of events you can enjoy. Mackenzie House is hosting A Victorian Toronto Christmas where you can see how people celebrated the holidays 200 years ago. If you can’t get enough of the historical holiday celebrations, Casa Loma Holiday Brunch takes place on Sunday. You can enjoy a holiday-themed meal and tour the castle. Looking for a more modern exhibit? Twelve Trees of Christmas are on display at the Gardiner Museum. See the extravagant trees designed by Toronto’s top architects and designers.
Holiday events aren’t the only highlights of this weekend. Romeo and Juliet ends its four-day stint in Toronto on Sunday. The ballet rendition of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy features an all-new production by Alexei Ratmansky. Want to watch something the whole family can enjoy? Ross Petty Production’s The Wizard of Oz has its world premiere on Saturday. This version of the story is based on the book by L. Frank Baum and sees Dorothy and Toto in a strange new world. Seussical the Musical is also celebrating its opening weekend in Toronto. The show is a mix of several Seuss books and runs until December 30. Finally, if the kids want to enjoy the outdoors, Kidzfest takes place on Saturday. At Yonge-Dundas Square, children can enjoy rides, activities and meet some of their favourite characters from Dora, Kung Fu Panda and Happy Feet.
Finally, if your health is your biggest concern this weekend, check out Sprouting this evening. The seminar is about how changing your diet will make your healthier and add years to your life. There’s also the Whole Life Expo going on at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Learn about natural health, alternative medicine and eco-friendly living while shopping and getting lots of freebies.
There are plenty of more events going on this weekend, so don’t let the cool weather turn you off, go out and discover Toronto.
