Resources for Resolutions

by Sarah Lambert

It’s only mid-January and I’m already feeling the temptation to stray from my resolutions and the studies that I’ve been reading say that most Canadians already have. To keep myself on track, I’ve been relying on a few key resources to provide the guidance and motivation I need.

Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself by Dr. Alejandro Junger
Clean  is a must-read for anyone who is ready to stop denying the toxic load modern living is inflicting on their body. Written by medical doctor, Alejandro Junger, this book lays out the many sources of toxic exposure we encounter in our daily lives and the effects they have on the body in language that is easy to understand. Based on his experience of healing from the health problems he developed after moving to the United States and transitioning to the western way of life, Dr. Junger has developed a 21-day program designed to detoxify your body, heal your digestive system, and rejuvenate your health. By avoiding specific foods, supplementing my diet with key nutrients, and switching to two liquid diets and a solid lunch, I’m already feeling the benefits of Clean: weight loss, clarity of mind, clear skin, and the disappearance of nagging health problems. So far, I’m finding the program easy to follow and incorporate into my busy schedule. For me, following the Clean Diet for 21 days is a fantastic way to ditch the bad habits I fell into over the holidays and get on track with eating a healthy diet for the rest of the year.

Booty Camp Fitness Home Edition DVD
I’m about as far from being a fitness guru as you can get. My fitness levels are embarrassingly low and just stepping foot into a gym gives me the creeps. However, I’m determined that this year is the year I become a more active person. I’ve found that boot camp classes are a great way to push myself physically and make the most of a workout. However, these classes can be expensive and I’m not always able to find time to get to one. Luckily, Booty Camp Fitness founder, Sammie Kennedy, has put together a home workout package that pushes me to break a sweat on my schedule, in the convenience of my own home. The set comes with 11 DVDs and some of the workouts are less than half an hour, so I can always manage to fit one in, even if I’m tight on time. The kit also includes a skipping rope (which some of the workouts require), a measuring tape for tracking your progress, a healthy lifestyle guide, and access to an e-cookbook of healthy recipes. With all of this knowledge at my fingertips, even I’m having trouble coming up with excuses to miss my daily sweat session.

Mint Money Management App
This year I’m trying to be a bit more careful with my pennies, so that when 2012 draws to a close, my savings account will be a little bit richer. Using the Mint.com app on my iPhone has been extremely helpful in making good on this resolution. Keep track of your account balances wherever you might be, monitor your expenditures, categorize each expense, and have a visual reference of how much of your monthly budget remains at any given time, all with one handy app. I’ve been enjoying these and the other comprehensive features offered by Mint.com for keeping tabs on my personal finances.
Available for free from the Mint.com.

It’s never too late to get back on track with your resolutions, or even to set new ones. And luckily, there are many useful resources to help you out along the way. These are three that have been proving helpful in working towards my big goals. If you’ve found any that are keeping you on track, please leave a comment below!
