Review: Mellow Drama

Louise Burns

By Tina Yazdi

Louise Burns, bassist and co-founder of the all-girl band Lillix, recently released her eagerly anticipated solo debut “Mellow Drama.” Originally from Vancouver, Burns has played in a number of bands, notably the Blue Violets. On her myspace page her music is categorized as alternative, country, and pop but there are clear ‘50s and ‘60s influences throughout the album. Buddy Holly, Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star, Jay and the Americans, and girl groups from the ‘60s have been drawn as points of comparison.

The album flows well, with emotionally honest and intelligent lyrics presented in a bold but light style that’s easy and engaging to listen to. The songs range from fun and upbeat to slower, mesmerizing tempos.

Her album explores a range of vocal styles, from the Patsy Cline inspired “What do you wanna do?” to the cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Gypsy’s Wife”. The Blue Violet’s Coral Osborne makes a vocal appearance as well. Notably, Louise Burns plays nearly all of the instruments on the album herself, attesting to her talent.

If you’re in the Vancouver area and want to check her out, she has an upcoming show on April 28 at the Vogue Theatre. You can also find her on iTunes if you want to listen and download the album.
