Sold Out Toronto Town Hall on Financing Transit Expansion

February 1st's sold out Toronto Town Hall event featured a lively discussion on financing transit expansion, with panelists John Tory, Steve Munro, and Josh Fullan, and co-moderated by Sarah Thomson and Karen Stintz.

The inaugural Toronto Town Hall event was held at Workplace One on February 1st. Spearheaded by Women’s Post CEO & Publisher, Sarah Thomson, the event series aims to bring the community together and generate dialogue around the important issues facing the city in order to move forward with solutions, while raising money for local charities.

Sarah Thomson and councilor Karen Stintz, chair of the TTC, co-moderated the sold out event. Our expert panel included Josh Fullan, a transit advocate and founder of Maximum City; John Tory, former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader, current chair of the Greater Toronto Civic Action Alliance, and radio personality on NewsTalk1010; and Steve Munro, an advocate for the improvement of Toronto’s transit system for more than 35 years. Several city councilors and former MPPs, along with distinguished members of the business community, came together with nearly 200 Toronto citizens to listen to what they had to say. News cameras from CTV and CBC, along with other members of the media, were present to capture this informative and engaging discussion.

A wide menu of options for financing Toronto’s transit expansion were discussed, including sales taxes, a gas tax, toll roads, toll lanes, multi-tiered pricing for fares, and a referendum for voters to decide how TTC expansion will be paid for. What was clear is that there is no one solution to finance Toronto’s transit expansion needs. But, the city needs a sustainable, dynamic plan that blends a variety of the aforementioned options and isn't subject to the whims of politicians.

Photos from the event can be seen here. Look for more photos and videos from the event coming soon. And as tickets are going quickly, be sure to buy tickets to the next Toronto Town Hall, a debate on transit, discussing subways vs. LRTs, taking place on February 29th.

Based on the response to the first event, the Toronto Town Hall series is expected to continue to grow over the coming year. Events will be held on a monthly basis. For more information visit http://www.womenspost.ca/events.
