Shredding It: Day 30

A 20-something intern at Women’s Post who loves food, chronicling her way through the world of working out and the 30 Day Shred.

It’s the end. I can’t quite believe it. The last day of my journey through Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred. The results? I’ve lost five pounds and gotten some muscle definition.

This probably would have been more successful had I followed a specific diet plan. Or any diet plan, really. But it did mean that I could eat what I wanted with some reassurance that it wasn’t going to be that terrible since I’d be doing crunches and lunges later on. But still, five pounds later, I’m feeling pretty good. Although the peameal bacon sandwich with mayo that I ate from the St. Lawrence Market probably isn’t doing very much for the tiny ab definition I managed.

While I can’t say that I’ve become an exercise fanatic quite yet, I can appreciate the value of exercising regularly. A colleague of mine asked if I would continue the Shred, past the 30 day mark. I’ll be honest: I probably won’t be exercising every day. Even through this Shred, I didn't quite manage to do it all 30 days. But 25 minutes is do-able in the long haul and my goal is to do it about three times a week, upping the intensity and exercises beyond the DVD workouts as I get stronger. It’s more about being active on a regular basis than dieting and exercising rigidly every single day. However, my boyfriend says he's keen on using the DVD himself. But if he’s going to do it, I admit that I'm more likely to keep doing it. It's the competitive drive in me. I can’t let him get all buff and meanwhile be sitting around with my muffin top growing.

I feel like I need to put heavy and deep words of meaning here but I can’t say much more than exercising does work. If you put in the time, sweat and pain, you will see results. It’s plain and simple. You might not like it but it is that simple. In the mean time, I’m off to Mandarin to celebrate my 30 Day Shred journey. I was promised this by the same boyfriend who wants to exercise.

…Yeah, I’ll totally be back here talking about lunges again.

If anyone out there is doing the Shred, let me know how it’s going at jelenad@womenspost.ca
