Fall Back in Love with Running

It’s been four months. The relationship, at first, had so much potential. And now, like many others in years past, you’re starting to rethink your I’m-gonna-start-running-New-Year’s-resolution. But before you relegate those Nikes to “gardening only” status, take some cues from the dating world to help renew your passion for the sport.

Make a Mixed Tape
Sometimes, hitting shuffle on the iPod just won’t do. There’s truth that selected music can make you run faster. So why not set the mood with a new playlist? For a warm-up, start off with a slower rhythym and integrate faster-paced songs throughout your run. And for uphills, pick a song with a steady beat to help you pace yourself.

Buy Yourself Something Pretty
Whether it be properly fitted shoes or a new water bottle fanny pack (hey, don’t knock it ’til you try it), tell running how hot you think it is by buying something special for the occasion. Here are some of my faves:

  • Nike + iPod Sport Kit. This sensor works with your iPod and tells you how fast you’re going, how many kilometres you’ve covered and how many calories you’ve burned.
  • Windbreaker. Not just any lightweight jacket will do. Look for one with roll-over cuffs so you don’t have to invest in (and then subsequently lose) running gloves.
  • Running toque While this makes me look like a 12-year-old boy, I totally swear by it (especially in Calgary’s schizophrenic weather). It keeps body heat from escaping, wicks away sweat and covers your ears. I’ve even opted for one with a hole in the back to put your ponytail through (I know…fancy).
  • Have Date Nights
Set short- and long-term goals and celebrate each accomplishment. Treat yourself to a nice dinner, a second helping of dessert, or a hot-stone massage. And most importantly, don’t feel guilty about it.

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
Post-run, your body needs to repair itself. Rest. Cross train. Lifting weights, yoga and cycling are all low-impact activities that work out other muscle groups and naturally complement running.

Don’t Compare Your Relationship to Others
So what if the girl on the treadmill next to you is clocking 10km in 40 minutes. It’s not about her; it’s about you. Be happy in meeting your own goals (…and rejoice in the fact that she possibly has cellulite).
