Catholicism, Buddhism and Justin Bieber

I’m not now, nor have I ever been a religious person but lately I can’t help but being a bit of a Belieber.

If you don’t know who Justin Bieber ( @justinbieber ) is, give your head a shake. 1 part Backstreet Boy, a dash of JTT, a tbsp of brand new puppy and a pinch of crack, this Youtube superstar is the hottest thing since sliced bread... toasted.

I’m not proud of this fact but I willl admit, I’ve gotten a bit caught up in Biebermania, myself. Sure, he may only be 16 and in desperate need of a haircut, but if we’re speaking honestly here, it’s kind of hard not to love him. Even if he knows he’s adorable. And is obsessed with Chuck Norris.

Although Statistics Canada suggests that in recent years, young adults are reporting having no religious affiliations, I would like to politely disagree. Young adults may have abandoned traditional religions, sure, but Bieberism seems to be on a very steep incline. Just look at all the petitions, fan sites and over 2.3 million [crazed] followers on Twitter if you don’t believe me.

According to me, Justin Bieber seems to be more popular than Catholicism, Buddhism, Judaism and the Kabbalah combined. And it seems that even big time celebrities like Usher and Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and Ludacris are all getting in on the action.

But, like any religion, there are those who oppose. Last time I checked, at least 16,636 people on Facebook were Bieber-bashers and even have an entire [and apparently quite popular] Facebook group solely dedicated to how “queer” he is. Sure, you may not like him and you may think his song “Eenie Meenie” is over-rated and annoying, but he is definitely not queer.

JB (Beebz, as I like to refer to him) is a stereotypically heteronormative boy. If anything, he’s a bit of a womanizer.

Sure, you can definitely argue that Justin Bieber isn’t a religion and you might be right, but you don’t see God breaking the Billboard Top 100 charts or being nominated for a Juno now do you?

I rest my case. Amen.
