How to run for Mayor of Toronto: The first steps
October 28, 2009 - 10:33pm — by
I spent the afternoon doing research on what it might take to run for mayor of Toronto. I found a good resource at http://www.toronto.ca/elections/index.html
I have learned that the next city election is Monday Nov. 8, 2010. And that nobody can announce their candidacy until their nomination forms are accepted by the city clerk’s office. The earliest date to submit a nomination form is Jan. 4, 2010.
I have learned that only two women in Toronto’s history have held the mayor’s position; they were June Rowlands and Barbara Hall – and each only did one term (3 years) with Barbara Hall losing in her second attempt to win over the amalgamated city of Toronto. No women has yet become mayor of the greater city of Toronto
I have learned that if I intend to run for mayor then I am not allowed to canvas or raise campaign funds until my nomination form is accepted by the city clerk’s office and I must pay a $200 filing fee.
I have learned that the maximum campaign contribution I can accept if running for mayor is $2500. A good campaign could take approximately $1 million. I will have to find 400 people who like me enough to contribute $2500 or 100,000 who like me enough to throw 10 bucks my way.
Tonight I learned about social media and the power of the masses.
Now I need to figure out how to combine what I learned this afternoon and what I learned tonight.
I'll take any help or advice I can get

You would be a great
You would be a great historical reference

You should volunteer for her and
write some campaign literature
about the history of Toronto.

Women in Political Leadership
You mention that only two women have been Mayor in the City of Toronto - yet you are certainly talking about the post-amalgamation city - which within the boundaries of Metropolitan Toronto included 12 other municipalities from 1953 to 1967, then 6 municipalities plus Metro from 1967 to 1998. It's true that only two women have been Mayor of the pre-amalgamation City of Toronto - however, True Davidson was the Reeve of East York (a defacto Mayor), Marie Curtis, the Reeve of Long Branch (again, a defacto Mayor), Joyce Trimmer the Mayor of Scarborough and currently sitting on City Council, Francis Nunziata - who was the Mayor of York. She was preceded by another woman in York, Gayle Christie. I'm sure I've missed someone. So, since 1953 there have been at least 8 women in political leadership roles inside the current boundaries of the City of Toronto.
