I love the water and often fantasize about one day owning my own boat, to sail the seven seas. My only real experience sailing was at summer camp as a teen. I took out a Laser II, all by myself, with visions of gracefully sailing around the bay. Instead, I capsized a few meters from the dock, having to be towed back to safety. I may not be the sailor I thought I could, but that doesn't mean I can't indulge myself by dressing the part. Nautical inspired fashion are in! I may get to wear it while sailing, albeit with someone else at the helm.

Many designers looked to the waves for inspiration for their Spring/ Summer 2009 collections. Designers like Michael Kors and D&G featured nautical stripes as part of their preppy, sporty summer looks. With the sea as my muse, I've selected some nautical influenced items that will look great on or off the seven seas.

When one thinks of maritime fashion, automatically vertical stripes of navy and white come to mind. Jump on board with this All Aboard top from Mink Pink with it's crisp navy stripes and squared off silhouette give it a nautical vibe that will have you saluting the captain, even if it's just your local bus driver.

Dressing for the sea doesn't mean you have to stick with the traditional nautical motif. Play with the striped motif and opt for diagonal or chevron striped garments, not only will they create a slimmer silhouette but your nautical look won't be as literal. Hitting the deck has never looked so stylish, especially when you step out wearing these Blue Moon jeans from French Connection. The button front bib detailing and flared bell bottom leg will have any lass earning her sea legs in no time.

With so many nautical inspired looks, it can be easy to get carried away and end up looking like an extra from Master and Commander.
