Kathy Buckworth is an award winning writer, television personality, public speaker, and mother of four: A modern day Superwoman extraordinaire? She doesn’t seem to think so. Some might think she had a bit more than 24 hours in a day; for moms out there curious to know how Kathy has mastered her many conflicting schedules, the answer is quite simple: she just so happens to blend em’ altogether.

With over 18 years of corporate marketing experience, writing always seemed to come natural to Kathy. Not to sound too cliché, but Kathy insists she only started to write for a niche audience when she figured she had something to say; something others (specifically moms) would be able relate to. For those of you who don’t know, Kathy writes about the constant struggles of managing her work, raising her children, and being a wife somewhere in between. She looks to provide mothers with the things they want to hear using her own personal experiences, in order to help moms find humour in the lighter side of things.

After having her fourth child, Kathy decided she’d had enough; she put down her briefcase, and started to write about the many challenges of being a mother. In 2005, The Secret Life of SuperMom was published, and Kathy never looked back; following her first book with SuperMom: A Celebration of All You Do in 2006, Journey to the Darkside: SuperMom Goes Home in 2007, and The BlackBerry Diaries: Adventures in Modern Motherhood in 2009.

Kathy has since grown to act as a corporate spokesperson for a number of high profile companies, write regular columns for magazines, and appear frequently on shows such as Slice Network’s Birth days, CBC’s National News, and CityTV’s Breakfast Television among others. When asked about some of her favourite projects, Kathy replies, “Whatever I’m working on.” She always finds joy in the variety, flexibility, and journey of her work.

After being amazed by all of her accomplishments, I couldn’t help but ask Kathy on the key to her success.

Her response? “My sense of humour.”

Kathy insists one of the key ingredients to her recipe of success has always been her sense of humour. Moms are constantly on edge; by finding humour in everyday chaos, Kathy shows other moms that balance is something you need. To further demonstrate this balance, Kathy often uses the term ‘blend’ to describe her days. For instance, prior to our phone interview at promptly 9 AM, Kathy had already gotten in a bit at the office and drove her daughter to work. After our interview, she was heading off to pick up her son from camp, and then back to work, before a girl’s night out at Springridge Farm.

As Kathy likes to say, “The day is one big blend of work, life, family.”

Kathy is currently working on a number of fun projects and continuing events, promoting her new book, Shut Up and Eat, available in bookstores across Canada. The book explores the challenges of moms and their families, and works with moms to ultimately put dinner on the table. She is currently out West, visiting Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton for her book tour.

When she’s not being a modern day version of SuperMom, Kathy likes to surround herself with a great network of friends, grab a glass of Chardonnay (maybe two), or sit back and relax with a good read.
